Cavalcade of the Magi

Every year, in the early afternoon of 6th January, the Florentines gather in the historic city center for an appointment as heartfelt as it is suggestive. On the day of Epiphany, in fact, the city relives the ancestral arrival of the Magi to the Bethlehem grotto, to celebrate the new born the Jesus Christ.

The Cavalcade of the Magi was introduced in Renaissance Florence: the first parade took place on 6th January 1417. From that moment, all the men of the powerful Medici family took part in the procession, dressing crimson coats and colorful doublets. A festival of colors still preserved by the figurants of the Cavalcade of the Magi, all dressed in Renaissance costumes.

The parade is traditionally opened by the three Magi on horseback, with precious gifts. Not far away follow the nobles, the bourgeois and the bankers, then the artisans and the merchants. Falconers, flag wavers and musicians close the procession, for a total of 500 participants.

A slice of the Renaissance Florence not to be missed!
